Spend a fun day exploring in Enkhuizen: A day trip from Amsterdam, Netherlands

It was a perfect sunny October-ish Sunday – and me and Luka were both off work. What better to do than explore the new country we found ourselves in? If you are not familiar with our current situation yet, we are currently living and working in Amsterdam and it is turning out to be a great chapter in our life!

Since we were sleeping in and having a late breakfast that Sunday we decided to visit Enkhuizen – a small but charming town north of Amsterdam. As we heard, Enkhuizen is the hidden gem of the Netherlands, overlooked by many tourists but nevertheless spectacular with its vibe and the harbour.

We haven't yet figured out car sharing and so we decided to take a train. The train ride was beautiful – it gave us time to see and notice the beautiful Amsterdam surroundings and the Dutch nature.

As soon as we stepped out of the train and made our way out of the train station, my mood instantly lifted. There is a beautiful harbour right next to the train statition. But not only the harbour – here are some great things to do if you find yourself in Enkhuizen.

1. Walk through the Enkhuizen Harbour

As you get off the train and walked out of the train station, you find yourself in a magnificent harbour of Enkhuizen. The first harbour in Enkhuizen was found in the 14th century and got expanded in the 15th and 16th century. The ships are still magnificently colorful and old, and they seem like a perfect representation of what is yet to be seen in Enkhuizen.

Walk through the harbour to enjoy the views of the city and on the other side, of Ijsselmeer and Merkarmeer lakes.

2. Explore the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen

Zuiderzee Museum is one of the most famous and visited museums in the Netherlands. It's divided in two parts – the indoor museum and the open-air museum. In the indoor section of the museum, you can learn about the history of shipping in the north region of the netherlands and its legacy today. If you want to see the whole museum with both sections and take time to explore it, you could easily spend a day roaming through the exhibits.

Since we wanted to do other things in Enkhuizen besides the Zuiderzee Museum we decided to only explore the open-air museum in which we could see how the Dutch used to live around the old Zuiderzee area. You can walk through an impressive village and peak into houses to explore what life used to be like.

Peak into the houses to see what life used to look like and read the stories of locals and of how they used to live. There are a number of amazing details to discover about life and work in the past in the Zuiderzee area.

During late spring, summer and early fall, volunteers walk around in traditional Dutch clothing showing and telling you about the past. Among other interesting things to see, there is an old Dutch candy shop, a classroom in an old school, and an eel smokehouse.

3. Stroll the gorgeous streets of Enkhuizen

While Enkhuizen was quite quiet and chill on Sunday when we visited the town, there are plenty of cute stores and cafés to explore! If you have time to lose yourself in the city, you will find most pictureque streets in the Netherlands and the ramparts of this fortified city.

You can shop for some amazing souvenirs in Enkhuizen, too! The entire center is filled with cool shops you can't find anywhere else. You can also buy some great local products, such as get some pastries or fresh bread from Bakkerij 't Broodhuys or Bakkerij Rood.

4. Have beer in Herberg de Compagnie, Enkhuizen

Of course, there are many cool bars in Enkhuizen but we happened to walk into Herberg de Compagnie and instantly love it! They have an amazing choice of tap beers and great charcuterie boards to go with! Or you could go for a full dinner, the food looked delicious!

Some of the other things that you could do in Enkhuizen and we unfortunately didn't have time for that Sunday are the Flessenscheepjes Museum, where you can see ships in bottles from all parts of the world (miniature Enkhuizen harbour!) and the Old City Jail.

Let me know what you liked most on your trip to Enkhuizen!
